The Trail

Trail Alerts

Trail Alert: Taramakau - From Sunday 2nd November: The Gentle Annie track, that leads off the trail on the southern side of the Taramakau Bridge, has had some storm manage. Over the next couple of weeks there will be intermittent use of quad bikes and trailers across the trail in this area as they undertake repairs. This will be signposted. There should be no interruption to cyclist but please take care in this area.

Event: Ride the Wilderness: Saturday 15th November 2025: This event will be held throughout the trail with start points in Ross, Hokitika, Cowboy Paradise and Kumara. Riders will be travelling from south to north. If you are planning to ride the trail on this day, please try and ride from south to north. The high water alternative route in place at the Weirs just north of Cowboy Paradise: This was put in place in September and will remain until further notice. The Council has to wait for this to dry out before it will be safe enough to assess and fix it. No timeframe is able to be given for this yet.

Totara Bridge Closure: Due to the structural condition of the Totara Bridge it has had to be closed. Riders are able to ride down to the bridge from either side but are not be able to cross it as barriers will be in place. This is an unfortunate situation that is outside the control of the Westland District Council and the Council apologises for any inconvenience. Alternative options are being explored.

BOOKING YOUR TRIP: We encourage everyone booking trips to use the operators listed on our website. They are the Official Partners and supporters of the trail. They are also kept up-to-date with all trail alerts and notifications.
